The Art of Truffle Hunting
Discover the centuries-old tradition of truffle hunting in Albania.
A Centuries-Old Albanian Tradition
Truffle hunting in Albania dates back generations. In the oak and hazel forests of regions like Korçë, Elbasan, and the southern highlands, families have passed down the knowledge of where truffles grow, when they ripen, and how to harvest them sustainably.
The Hunt
Traditional hunters work with trained dogs—never pigs, which damage the forest floor. The bond between hunter and dog is essential; a good truffle dog can detect mature truffles underground from several meters away. Hunts typically take place at dawn, when the forest is cool and truffle aroma is strongest.
Sustainable Harvesting
Responsible hunters only collect mature truffles, leaving immature ones to develop. They refill holes carefully and avoid damaging the mycelium network that connects truffles to host tree roots. This ensures the forest continues producing year after year.
